From the Forest Floor… and Up

The rainy night has been replaced with blue skies and bitter wind. It’s time to bundle up! πŸ§₯

    Wellness Tip for Medical Workers

Throughout the day, I am in and out of hospitals, loading and unloading patients for transport. I don’t have time to wash my hands every five minutes. I also don’t want sanitizer on my skin all day long.

One thing that is emphasized with any virus alert or with flue season is to keep your hands clean, and to keep your hands away from your face.

    Skin-Saver

One solution to putting sanitizer on my skin all day is keeping medical gloves on. I sanitize the hades out of my gloves all day – instead of my skin – and have clean gloves until I have a moment to wash my hands. You can also layer gloves and strip off the outer layer as needed.

    Stay well!

Ships don’t sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them.

Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.”

    Thoughts on Self-Love

“You’re worthy simply because you exist.”

    Terri Cole

When we talk about self-care and self-love, there are so many ideas and examples of ways in which we can take care of ourselves, embrace who we are, and keep our own cup full so that we can share out of our overflow with others.

    Giving yourself some TLC:

    Emotionally

    Taking time for grief

    A hot bath

    A good book

    Physically

    A walk in nature

    Yoga

    A Massage

    Spiritually

    Quiet time

    Prayer time

Taking time to journal dreams and messages

    Chanting

    Mentally

    Meditation

    Body, Mind and Spirit

    Aromatherapy

    Reiki

Out of all the ideas I’ve read about or practiced (we are probably all familiar with at least some of these acts of self-care and love), I never considered the act of receiving compliments and praise as one of them.

How do you talk to yourself?

How do you talk about yourself?

What do others compliment you on?

When we deflect a compliment, we do not take responsibility for the work, talent, and effort we have put into our successes. We deny our own value. We belittle our own worth.

A compliment is like being given a beautifully wrapped gift. – Terri Cole

We receive the gift by saying, “Thank you!”

When our response to a compliment is to deny its merit, it is like throwing the gift down and stomping on it.Terri Cole

Do you deflect compliments by putting yourself down?

    For example:

    “That is a beautiful painting!”

“Yes but, I messed this part up.”

“Someone else can’t love you enough to create self-love. It’s only you that can take the actions that will create a good relationship with yourself… and true self-love creates self-esteem.”

    A New Year

Sometimes there are so many items on my to-do list that it can be hard to know where to start. Not to mention, I can feel overwhelmed. For the first week in January, I’ve made a list of seven things I have been putting off: one simple task for each day. I wanted to start the first week off with positive accomplishments! The more success we have in reaching simple goals, the more we learn that we really can do anything!

Accomplish the small things and start reaching for the big ones!

Happy New Year! I wish you success with all your dreams and goals.

The feet and hands are very receptive parts of the body. They can absorb healing elements, at times, faster than taking something internally. If a foot bath were a prescription, it could sound something like this:

Take every morning on an empty stomach. Use essential oils or herbs in hot water and soak for 5-8 minutes.

  • Meditation Medicine

    Meditation Medicine

The words “meditation” and “medication” sound almost identical. If you switch out the c for a t they’re the same word. Meditation comes from the Latin root, meditatus, which means to think, pay attention to, or contemplate. It is similar to the Latin root (medicina) for Medicine meaning “art of healing.”

    Meditation as Medicine

“Not only does it change the way our brain works, it actually is almost like going to the gym – you’re actually building new connections and we can see on a brain scan structural changes after just eight weeks of meditation, and so you see an increase in density in a part of the brain that actually is associated with happiness, that’s associated with being able to make better decisions in our lives... and it also shrinks the part of our brain responsible for the stress response.”

    -Jamie Zimmerman

    Starting your Meditation Practice

Some things to keep in mind as you begin your own meditation practice are:

    Determine your why

Start with baby steps (5-10 minutes a day is better than an hour, once a week)

Choose what kind of meditation style resonates with you (Guided, silent, focusing on your breath, taking a journey with images and music)

    Make the Commitment

Join a group or start your own

β€œI think when we really quiet our minds we start to hear our hearts.”

    -Jamie Zimmerman

“The longest journey you will ever take is the 18 inches from your head to your heart.”

  • Remote Area Medical

    Remote Area Medical

In a remote area of rural Virginia, an annual, three-day event is held. People come from all over to attend a free traveling clinic providing medical aid they could not otherwise afford. More than 2,500 people line up for basic care over the course of the Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic, which begins each day before sunrise.

    Soul Food

Gathering around the table for a wonderful meal with good friends, great conversations, and a fun game – was a Hygge moment for me recently. I don’t always take the time, but when I do, I realize how much I’ve missed it!

I wonder how it is that the things that nourish my soul the most, many times end up last. When this gets done, or when that is finished – then I’ll take, make, create, or set aside those few, truly needed moments.

It took 5 months of “thinking” about taking the time before I made it to that table. As with so many other things that we schedule into our “to-do” list, it’s time to get out the daily planner or calendar and also schedule in our own nourishment.

What could you add into your schedule that will nourish your heart and soul? Make the appointment with yourself, set the time, and show up!
